  Crystal River Stakes
Skyline loveR
by Tracy Gantz
How long can Skyline Lover keep his Hialeah record perfect? If the Dec. 26 Crystal River Stakes is any indication, he may
never lose at the Florida track.
Jockey Cody Jensen aboard Flyin Fish,
however, wasn’t going to let Skyline Lover get away easily. When the gate opened, Shanley Jackson broke Skyline Lover alertly, but Flying Fish challenged immediately from the inside. It turned into a match race,
with the two horses trading places on the lead. Every time Skyline Lover put his head in front, Flying Fish came back on, until the final strides, when Skyline Lover thrust his head into first at the wire.
The battle caused Skyline Lover to set a track record for the 660 yards of :31.612 for a 123 speed index. The previous record, set in 2009, was :31.840. It was Skyline
Lover’s second consecutive track record, since he broke the 550-yard mark in winning the Orange Blossom Stakes two weeks previously. Skyline Lover won those same two stakes during the 2010-11 Hialeah season, as well as the Moonstone Stakes and Sailfish Stakes in his six starts at the track.
Matt Frazier trains Skyline Lover for owner Dan Frazier. Dr. James Burgess bred the gelding in Texas from
$45,525-earner Loves That Gold. Skyline Lover is the mare’s first winner. Burgess campaigned Skyline Lover
at two in 2008 and three in 2009. For his breeder, Skyline Lover won the 2009 New Mexico Derby Challenge-G3.
Flyin Fish (Fishers Dash- Jazzing Cheree), trained
by Tony Sedillo, races for owners Double Eagle Ranch and Buena Suerte Equine.
A two-time allowance winner, Flyin Fish qualified for and competed in the 2011 All American Derby-G1.
The Star Alert (Beat The Feet-TB-Lil Gamble Star), under jockey Djalma Macedo, ran third. Trained by Loren Brocka for owner Roman Correa, the gelding finished fifth in the Orange Blossom Stakes in his Hialeah debut.
Completing the field were Checotah
Dale (Eye For Dale-Checotah Kitty-TB), Heza Fast Corridor (Heza Fast Dash-Classic Corridor-TB), My Corona Memories (Corona For Me-Good Ole Memories), Wrangler On The Run (Call Me The Wrangler-Merry Millennium-TB), Dashing Manner (Title Contender-Dot Dot And Dash), Down N Cool (Brimmerton-Cool N Sixy-TB), and PLS Treasured Fame (Little Town Fame-TTS Red Tornado).

 the Signature Stakes
FReAking
by Tracy Gantz
it’s no coincidence that Freaking conjures
up a similarly named horse, 2009 World Champion Freaky, because the two are related.
Chickasis, the dam of Freaking, is the second dam of Freaky. While Freaking has a ways
to go to catch up to Freaky, he entered the stakes-winning ranks when he captured The Signature Stakes at Hialeah on Dec. 26.
At the start, the ground broke out from under Freaking just slightly.
Jockey Alex Baldillez Jr. gath-
ered him together immedi-
ately, and they vied with Just Wannabe Postoak to their immediate inside. However, Bold Badon bore out into Just Wannabe Postoak, who lost his position.
The incident didn’t bother Freaking, who kept to his business to win by a half-length in :17.484 over Opportunity Zooms, with
Bold Badon third. The stewards posted
the inquiry sign, and Jesus Salazar on Just Wannabe Postoak lodged an objection against Victor Olivo on Bold Badon. The stewards disqualified Bold Badon to fourth, elevating Just Wannabe Postoak into third.
Trainer Ricardo Martinez said that a change of bit on Freaking led to the geld- ing’s improving form. Martinez has trained
Freaking since mid-August. In his four starts for the conditioner prior to The Signature, Freaking won
an allowance and finished second in two others. This is Freaking’s first stakes victory.
Dr. Ed Allred bred Freaking in California. The mare, Chickasis, finished third in the 1995 California Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG3 and has produced 21 starters,
17 of them winners. Those
include graded stakes winners Hot Hitter, Hard Hitting, and Lassen County; stakes- placed Secretly Seymour and Chickafire; and Chickasecret, the dam of Freaky.
Jorge Mendoza owns and trains Opportunity Zooms (Shazoom-Strawfly Six), ridden by Randy Edison. Opportunity Zooms finished second in the 2010 Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs and has earned $137,156.
Just Wannabe Postoak (Royal Blue Chew Chew-Nocoronajustbud) races for owner-breeder Noel Prieto and is trained by Luis Villafranco.
Completing the field were Bold Badon (Dale Badon-Darbs Doll), Ethics Aside (Mr Jess Perry- Daring Difference), An Ocean Rocket (Ocean Runaway-Bebes Ronas Rocket), Streakin Rare (Fredricksburg-Regally Rare), Louisianafeature One (Jess Louisiana Blue-Brenda Feature), and Sassy Shaelan (Bono Jazz-Rsassy Sarah).
