Billy Smith knows how to get a Champion—ask Pat Guthrie to partner
with him on one. The two had Champion FDD Dynasty with Vessels Stallion Farm
and Champion Kates Dynasty with Jerry Windham. Now with Dean Frey they have Danjer, who won his second Aged Gelding and Aged Horse Champion titles in 2021 and added the World Championship.
Smith noted at the awards ceremony
that Guthrie had talked about quitting after getting in on Danjer. But after Danjer won his Championships last year, Smith convinced Guthrie to keep going.
“We bought four yearlings last year,” Smith said.
Both Smith and Guthrie praised the outstanding job Frey has done with Danjer.
“I give all the credit to Dean,” said Smith. “He manages him well. I just show up in the winner’s circle and enjoy every minute of it.”
Added Guthrie, “He bred the horse, he raised the horse, he’s trained the horse—it’s like his baby. He’s just managed him masterfully, and it’s been an honor to be part of it.”
After a phenomenal year of four wins and one second in six starts during 2020, Danjer improved on that record for 2021. In seven starts, he won five, including four Grade 1 events, and ran second in the other two.
At Remington Park to start the season, Danjer finished second by a slim nose in the Leo Stakes-G1 and then captured the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1, defeating Apollitical Pence by a neck.
“He got away slow, and Apollitical Pence looked extra good the way he jumped out
of there,” said jockey Cody Smith. “But my horse likes to eyeball a horse in front of him, and use that horse as a target to catch. That
