For the second consecutive year, the stallion Danny Cartel sired the Mexican Champion. He sired Juanito Y Danny, the 2020 Mexican Champion, as well as Texana Cartel, the 2021 Mexican Champion.
Cuadra La Presita bred both Champions and stands Danny Cartel. Rancho El Suspiro, which purchased Juanito Y Danny when
he topped the Subasta Selecta Sale at the Hipodromo de las Americas at 1.4 million pesos ($69,328), also acquired Texana Cartel. The filly had been entered in the 2020 sale, but it was not held due to the pandemic.
Texana Cartel is out of the California-bred Oak Tree Special mare La Texana Tree, who
is officially unraced. Dr. Anselmo Aguilar of Cuadra La Presita and Mexico’s leading Quarter Horse breeder, said that “La Texana Tree was very fast in unofficial races.”
Texana Cartel started five times at two in 2021, winning three races and running second in the other two. Two of those victories came in major Mexican events— the Subasta Selecta Futurity-RG2 and the Garañones Futurity -RG2.
Like many of the big futurities in the U.S., the 300-yard Garañones Futurity attracts many hopefuls. In 2021, 200 were entered, with 22 qualifying trials. The trials were held June 19-20, and 188 actually competed.
Only one horse shaded 15 seconds in the trials, fastest-qualifier AG Navigating Steph, a daughter of the multiple stakes-winning Feature Mr Jess stallion Jess Navigating. Her time of :14.974 led to her being made the favorite. Texana Cartel qualified in a time of :15.092.
“In her works and in her three previous outings, the filly had already shown potential,” said Aguilar of Texana Cartel. “She even won her trial by 2 1/2-lengths. So, I had a lot of confidence in her.”
With jockey Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez riding, Texana Cartel broke out of the gate on top in the July 11 final. She held on to win by a nose over BR Chivali in :14.85, with AG Navigating Steph third.
