By Patte Smith; photo courtesy of Jeanne Gormley Neighborhood photographer Jeanne Gormley spotted this nest of Sharp-shinned Hawks with their very intense and watchful mother close by. These smaller raptors are identi able by their long legs, short wings and very long tails, which they use to navigate their preferred habitat of coniferous trees in mixed woods, sometimes in dense deciduous trees with brush or clearings nearby. Thus, the draw to our surrounding area. The hawk’s speed and agility allows them to successfully hunt smaller birds and rodents, squirrels, bats, frogs, lizards, snakes and large insects.
