Many civilizations glorify war by emphasizing the idea of “having something worth dying for.” Palestinian culture values life by emphasizing the sentiment of “having something worth living for.” This love of life inspires Palestinian endurance. It also continues to inspire and motivate UPA as an organization that for 45 years has never let our people down.

It is very easy to look at the struggle of Palestinians and the conditions under which they must live and concentrate only on alleviating suffering. But along the way, UPA—which began with a strong focus on standard humanitarian aid—decided to expand that work and lean into the true definition of the word, humanitarian. We understood that stepping in during times of great tragedy, while important, must be done alongside the building of real lives for very real people.
