SONOGRAPHY OF THE THYROID AND
NECK
• A thyroid sonogram is performed with a high- frequency linear transducer.
• The patient should be in a supine position, with the neck extended.
• Normal thyroid tissue is homogenous and consists of medium to high-level echogenicities similar to that of the testes.
• Images are obtained in both sagittal and transverse plane of each lobe and of the isthmus.
• A sonographic examination of the entire neck should also be performed for enlarged lymph nodes or masses.
