Texas Twister Stakes
KRASH COURSE
by John Moorehouse
Krash Course joined the club of multiple stakes win- ners on May 14, taking the $55,000 Texas Twister Stakes to conclude a card that included five stakes races
at Sam Houston Race Park.
A six-year-old gelding owned by Martha Nevarez
and trained by Jose Nevarez Jr., Krash Course emerged at the front of a blanket finish by a neck, completing the 110-yard sprint in :7.170 to register an 81 speed index. Abraham Gonzalez-Munoz drew the riding assignment.
The $33,300 first-place share of the purse pushed the gelding’s total earnings into six digits
at $101,887. Krash Course now has six wins in 20 lifetime starts, and two triumphs in stakes company. Krash Course also won the 2019 version of the King William Stakes. He holds four additional second- or third-place finishes in stakes races. He’s competed in at least one stakes event in every campaign of his competitive career.
Bennie and Terri Jeter bred Kash Course out of 4-time winner Rare Eye Opener, a 1999 mare.
Card One Starter (Docs Best Card-Stable Dancer), the post-time favorite and winner of the Oklahoma Derby-G3 at Remington Park back in March, finished second by a nose in his first out at the 110-yard dis- tance. Jose E. Guzman is the owner, Victor Urieta Jr. is the trainer and Juan Diaz Jr. was in the irons. All About The Kiss (Kiss My Hocks-All About Tonight) placed third for Marc and Michelle Jungers. Marc Jungers also trains the filly, who had Lucas Constantin up.
Rounding out the official order of finish, Ed O (Mr Piloto-Shezadashinatcha) was fourth, followed by PYC Lovestruck (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Lovethewayyoulie) and Jess A Boy (Mr Jess Perry- Aquafina) in a dead heat for fifth. Pa Cha Ching (Tempting Dash-Toole N Round) and Johnny De Capo (Capo De Capi-Dash For Ted) dead-heated for seventh, followed by Cartel Jr. (Corona Cartel-Shes Takes All). Straw Bux scratched.
John Buchanan Memorial
TEMPTING KNOCKOUT
by Tracy Gantz
Sam Houston Race Park honored trainer John Buchanan, who died last September, with the inaugural running of the $54,000 John Buchanan Memorial Stakes on May 28 for 3-year-old Texas- bred fillies. Tempting Knockout scored the first stakes victory of her career when she won the race. Tempting Knockout bore out slightly when breaking on top from the outside post. Jockey
Pedro Espinosa quickly got her running straight,
and though she bore out in the final stages, she surged forward to score by a 1/2-length. Tempting Knockout stopped the timer in :17.952 for 350 yards. Buchanan’s wife, Iris, and daughter, Amanda Buchanan Hamilton, made the trophy presenta-
tion to Pam and Jim Williams, who own Tempting Knockout in the name of their P&J Racing Ltd. Leon Bard trains Tempting Knockout, who was winning her second race in seven starts. Last year she qualified for the TQHA Sale Futurity-G2.
P&J Racing bred Tempting Knockout in Texas from unraced Passem Up Perry. The mare has produced six starters, all winners, including stakes winners Southern Temptation and SF Hot Pass and stakes-placed Woulda.
My Rockin Memories (Rock Solid Jess-Good Ole Memories), ridden by J.R. Ramirez, trained by Esteban Rubio, and owned by Sarah Huskey, fin- ished second. The filly won two races last year.
Victor Urieta Jr. piloted Greysland (Kiss My Hocks-Grey Daze) to third for owner Juan Manuel Pastrana and trainer Juan Diaz Jr. Greysland won the 2020 Dash For Cash Juvenile Stakes and ran second in the TQHA Sale Futurity.
Completing the field were Lone Star (Coronas Leaving You-Lonestar Shaker), Lethal Reign Corona (Lethal Corona-Lil Dashing Reign) and Miss Money Flying (Flyingwitheagles-CC Miss Money). A Fleeting Kiss and Pronto Alexa were scratched.
Tomball Stakes
AIR TO EM JESS
by Danny Camp
Only three were brave enough to enter the starting gate for the running of the $54,000 Tomball Stakes at Sam Houston on May 28.
It was a cloudy evening, but a fast track with
a slight head wind. Air To Em did not get off to the best start leaving the 4-post, which was in the middle of the three horses. He was out last of the three horses and after the second jump, he was 3/4-length back. Enter jockey Gaspar Garcia, first he straightened his mount as he was trying to move in. At the halfway point, they had made the lead by a head. At the wire, they hung on to win by a nose.
They completed the 350-yards in :17.913 to earn a 90 speed index. The 3-year-old gelded son of Dash Master Jess also earned the first place check worth $37,260. He now has a total bankroll worth $57,271, and he can brag about eight wins in his career. His team includes owner Luis Raul Garcia Nino and trainer Luis Nino.
Scarlett Hill Farm Inc. bred Air To Em out of multiple winner Processing Speed, a half-sister to Fair Meadows Sophomore Stakes winner Lipstick Memories. Processing Speed has produced five win- ners from seven starters. His second dam is multiple winner Promised Memories.
Dash N Leader (Down N Dash-Cartel Leader) was just a tick back to pocket second place money under Pedro Espinosa for owner Pete A Scarmardo and trainer G. L. Bard Jr. The gelding was a final- ist in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1, TQHA Sale Futurity-G2 and TQHA Sires Cup Futurity-G3.
Jesslightninglegs (Dash Master Jess-Lovely Legs) cashed the third place check for owner Luke R. Goebel and trainer Patrick L. Clemmons. Jose Vega was in the irons. The gelding was a finalist in the Sam Houston Derby-G3 earlier this year.
El Chocolatito, Gianniy, La Inseperable and Lethal Reign were scratched.
