Key Considerations for Family Therapists
Family therapists frequently encounter intergenerational conflict and challenging dynamics between parents, children, and siblings in clinical practice. Therapists
are trained to address these conflicts with varying theories and interventions. While sound theoretical backing is essential for effective therapy, it can also be helpful for therapists to have grounded understandings of content and life course issues that families face. The sheer number of intergenerational families who will be navigating later life decisions is growing rapidly as the baby boom generation reaches 65+ years of age and increases in longevity. This means therapists will likely see later life family issues presenting in practice at an increasing rate, and now is the perfect time to become prepared.
