Piqua: Bridge over the Great Miami River
Below: Many railroad bridges, including the bridge at Piqua, failed during the ood, even though railroad of cials parked loaded trains on them in a futile attempt to weigh the bridges down. Recently poured concrete piers for a replacement bridge became a platform for ood rescue. Terri ed residents clung to their destroyed homes or oating debris as it tumbled down the raging Great Miami River, scraping past the piers and often crashing into them. Somehow, brave men standing on the piers successfully rescued nearly a dozen people from the oating debris.
