Dayton:
West Third Street
Left: Businesses on West Third Street – and all over Dayton – were devastated by quickly rising water that destroyed their merchandise, and caused explosions and res. Floodwater in this section of town topped 10 feet. Remarkably, businesses reopened within
days. Sales were conducted on the sidewalks, while owners cleared several inches of mud from inside their buildings.
Right: Today, this section of West Third Street is home to the historic Wright-Dunbar neighborhood featuring the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park, the Wright Brothers’ bicycle shop, Paul Laurence Dunbar Memorial House, Bing Davis’ art studio, shops, restaurants and restored homes. This 2012 Urban Nights event depicts Wright-Dunbar’s vibrant revitalization. It is envisioned to someday provide an anchor for a larger West Third Street Heritage Corridor that will connect with the historic Wright Brothers’ airplane factory as well as the Veterans Administration.
