Dayton Daily News building on Ludlow Street
Left: The Dayton Daily News building, with its classical columns, prominently stood on the northwest corner of Fourth and Ludlow streets. During the ood, the newspa- per’s presses were ooded. John Patterson allowed the newspaper to be printed at the NCR campus.
According to reports by the Dayton Daily News, publisher – and later, Ohio governor – James Cox
sought a construction loan for the building in 1908 but was turned down by Valentine Winters, then president of Winters Bank. Cox found another funding source but was angry about Winters’ denial, so he told architect Albert Pretzinger to “build me a damn bank.” Pretzinger modeled the Dayton Daily News building after the Knickerbocker Trust in New York City. On November 30, 1978, the Dayton Daily News building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The newspaper’s editorial and business of ces moved to the former NCR Building 31 at 1611 South Main Street near the University of Dayton in April of 2007.
Right: In the 1960s, E.F. McDonald acquired the three buildings across Fourth Street for its headquarters.
The buildings were connected and renovated a number of times.
Today, Dayton Public Schools occupies the
space at 115 South Ludlow Street. The original, historical buildings still exist under the skin of the building.
