Dayton: Stewart Street Bridge and NCR
Left: The Stewart Street Bridge was completed in 1912 only to be submerged by the 1913 ood. This photo appears to have been taken from one of the many buildings on the National Cash Register Company (NCR) campus across the street from the bridge.
John Patterson, president of NCR, converted his entire company to provide ood rescue and relief. Patterson’s leadership surely saved thousands of lives.
Right: While the majority of those NCR buildings are now gone, there is a resurgence in the area. The GE Aviation Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research and Development Center (EPISCENTER) building was under construction on the University of Dayton campus in 2012. The university purchased the 115-acre campus, which included NCR Corporation’s world headquarters and Old River Park, in 2009. The area is now home to the University of Dayton’s riverfront cam- pus and serves as the west gateway to the university.
After serving the community for more than 90 years, the Stewart Street Bridge was replaced and then reopened in 2009. The six-lane bridge is the city’s largest. It features V-shaped piers, patterned concrete plazas at each corner and decorative under-bridge LED lighting.
