Monument Avenue
Left: Just one example of the power of the 1913 ood: An 60-foot timber oated between two houses on West Monument Avenue and rested on two window- sills as the water receded. Prior to the ood, this area was home to Dayton’s upper crust – industrialists and merchants. After the ood, many of these folks chose to relocate up Far Hills Avenue into Oakwood. The large, luxurious mansions and apartments in this area fell into disrepair. Many were demolished in the 1950s and 1960s, making way for Interstate 75.
Right: Because of The Miami Conservancy District ood protection system, the river no longer is something to be feared. Housing such as The Landing on Monument Avenue offers prime riverfront living. Restaurants and RiverScape MetroPark draw crowds back to the river for festivals and events nearly every summer weekend.
