Three major storms descended upon the Miami Valley in 1913, dumping 9 to 11 inches of rain on the region over several days. The heaviest rains fell between March 23 and 25. For ve hours during the ood, the water rose an average of 1 inch every two-and-one-half minutes in parts of Dayton, which was among the hardest hit. Cities all along the Great Miami River experienced the devastation. The Great 1913 Flood remains Ohio’s greatest natural disaster, killing more than 360 in the Miami Valley and
causing more than $100 million in local damages, which is about $2 billion in today’s economy.
