For seven years Nicole and Chad Humphrey, of famed Humphrey’s Smokers, have been involved in the Kora Kare for Kids BBQ contests to raise money for the Shriners. From being previous members on the NEBS board to their smoker-manufacturing plant in West Newfield, Maine, the Humphrey’s family has been a pillar in the North East BBQ scene for close to two decades now. So, helping this event go from a Thanksgiving-week- end backyard rib event in Turner Maine, to a 36-team KCBS event, was no small task. Tack on a Saturday SCA event with a Peoples Choice category, a car show, corn-hole contest, motorcycle and 4-wheeler ride, a hot wing eating contest, live music, and a Kid’s Q, and you have your hands full as organizers! So let me visually set the stage. The car ride to the fairgrounds was as picturesque and enjoyable as they come. Rolling farmland, hills, pastures of horses and cattle, and bails of hay speckled the ride like an oil painting of days gone by. All that one would expect in Maine. Once you roll your rig past check-in, you real- ize you're in a really special location. Teams were spread out across the entire fairgrounds, with some set up in the woods to the left, where my team Grand Smoke Railroad was, creating a wooded wall of blue smoke, tents and damn good aromas. To the right was what almost appeared to be a working farm. Several barns, small buildings, and even a large stage where part of the main area.
