This hasn’t been more true than during the American Royal when, during the NBBQA brunch, we honored Blues Hog BBQ founder and legend, Bill Arnold. If you missed this, then you missed a chance to shake the hand of someone who has in昀uenced everyone from the weekend backyard cook to world champions. His sauce has probably earned more grand championships around the world than perhaps any other and yet he remains so humble. Those in attendance to honor Bill and tell stories about him included NBBQA board members both past and present along with a couple past presidents. More than this were the stories people told from him peddling his sauce from out of the back of his truck to his humility and willingness to help others. For many, there wasn’t a dry eye during di昀erent times throughout the event. When he came into the Bullhorn BBQ site, the place erupted in applause with a standing ovation be昀tting the legend. However, when he took the microphone to recount a part of his story, his humility and his desire to keep going, to keep 昀ghting, despite his illness, was inspiring to those in attendance. Thank you Mr. Bill Arnold for being a beacon of hope for those out there trying to make their mark in our BBQ world. NBBQA MEMBER VOICES Rhett Roethe, 3-Headed Monster BBQ “I look forward to learning new approaches and ideas I can bring back to improve my business, as well as networking and socializing with friends I’ve met at past NBBQA conferences.” Shane Draper, Grilla Grills “NBBQA has been instrumental in establishing my personal brand. The knowledge and advice gained through networking opportunities have not only increased my brand’s value, but it has also landed me more jobs. It is well worth the investment to be a member.” Rob Dopp Rum Runners BBQ “The NBBQA is a great organization. They can help educate anyone to achieve their dreams such as catering, restaurants, competitive BBQ or on down to the backyard griller. There is a wealth of knowledge at your 昀ngertips.” OCTOBER 2019 BarbecueNews.com - 25
