Building The Sport Of Steak Cookoffs!
Heres to a SCA Happy New Year
By: SC Angus
2019 was a fantastic year! We saw record number of steak contests (well over 300), crowned a few world champions (Tona Pendray, Matt Ouverson, Robby Staggs along with all the international points champions) and witnessed many first-time cooks grab their Golden Ticket. 2020 promises to be an
even better year as we head to the World Championships in October. We will be knocking on the door of 500 contests worldwide this year and don’t be surprised if we just knock the door down as more contests come across the desk. Promoters are putting on amaz- ing contests with very creative ancillar- ies and the Reps continue to put the miles in to ensure each event has enough judges.
2020 will be bringing some new oppor-
tunities, as each year does, with new contests in new cities and hopefully in some new countries as the SCA continues to grow. This could not happen without your support week in and week out as you travel to different contests. Some have already done four in one weekend in two separate states travelling hundreds of miles in between. Your enthusiasm and com-
mitment to this food sport is propelling
the SCA into becoming the fastest
growing sanctioning body in the food
world. So, 2020 is looking very bright
and can’t wait to see all it has to offer.
Event Spotlight
The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint just does not know how to do anything low key and for this, we are thankful. January 24-25, 2020 The Shed will once again be hosting “The Shed Dual Steak Show- down” which, if it’s anything like last year, will be a major blowout and party. Kicking off Friday night there will be the Bud ‘n Boil, a competitor seafood boil and concert where all the cooks can let their hair down in the Shed fashion. Then Saturday’s dual will be all day with Bloody Marys, turkey and ribs for the ancillaries while putting in two steak
contests. There will also be a Jr. Pitmaster cook as well many prizes for the competitors. It will culminate with the winners from Steak A and Steak B going head to head for additional prize money and bragging rights. As of this writing there are already
173 cooks signed up to grab their piece of the $20,500 prize purse. We will see you in Ocean Springs, MS for one of the largest contests of the year.
Sponsor Highlight
We say this every month, but it is so true about all our sponsors, we simply couldn’t do this without them. One of these great partners is the Pit Barrel Cooker Company. A veteran owned company from Kentucky producing great barrel cookers which are excellent for the backyard cook. The 22-gallon
size makes them very portable to take to your family reunion or for tailgating at the next game. Noah and his team (which in- cludes his wonderful family) have put a $1000 bounty out for any- one who wins an SCA event using the Pit Barrel Cooker. Thank
you Noah and Pit Barrel.
ACE Hardware Points Chase
Heading into the new year, the points chase shows no signs of slowing down. Only eight points separates Jerry Buchan from first place Jonathon Frerich but take a good look are the rest of the Top Ten. Tim Brown, Amy Buchan and John Walter Lindsey, all currently tied for eighth place, are only eight points from moving into second place. That is just one or two top five finishes. However, if John Pendray, Layne Holmes, Chris Reed, Mike Knight, or Sandy Brown have anything to say about it, Jerry and Jonathon better look out. The 2020 ACE Hardware Points Chase is going to be very exciting to watch.
Happy New Year!
