2020 Has been a trying and stressful year for all of us. Many of our BBQ contests have gone away and left many us scrambling to fill the void of no competitions. Thank the dear Lord for having a few SCA contests to go to to keep our competitive juices flowing and giving some of us a chance to hang out with our BBQ family. We live in Naples, Florida, and have put in a lot of miles over the years. I recently drove a 1600 mile round trip to compete in a con- test in Cookville, Tennessee and got to hang out with some cousins and old friends, and it was worth every mile.
It's hard to know what's coming at the time of a new year, but I hope we return to a usual living way. Hopefully, this coronavirus goes away, the election turns out to be positive for our country, and our economy gets back to what it was just a short time ago.
The SCA seems to be coming back around with several contests, and with their safety guidelines and trying to do the right thing, and the contests have not been a hotspot for the virus. Maybe eat- ing a steak is good for our health!
I wrote about my grandson going to Tennessee with me and get- ting some arrowheads on our trip, and a gentleman read about it and sent me a package with a complete kit that teaches you how to make your own arrowheads. My grandson was fascinated, and we are getting close to being able to make our arrowheads. I sent this gentleman some sauces and rubs and can’t wait to send him pictures of our first arrowhead!
I have had a friend that has been a BBQ judge for a long time that used to bring us a delicious cake now and then, and I have been asking for the recipe for years. I received a package in the mail the other day with the old family recipe and even got the pans to make it in. We are making the recipe today and will send pictures when it is done. It might be the best cake I ever had!
My hope for 2021 is good health for everyone and a busy schedule of BBQ events for us all to enjoy. I want to see Venice come back with the record setting crowds and lots of money made for all the vending teams and a lot of money brought in to keep the kids and the programs that they support running strong. We support a Naples program that helps many kids, and we need things to get back to stock to keep the new beggings program on the right track.
Grant BBQ Festival brings in money for kids at Christmas, and Timmy Vee does a great job and works hard to bring a lot of kids a
great Christmas. This year has put many charity programs in jeop- ardy of not helping the kids they love to support!
If anyone is in the market for new Meadow Creek Grills, I have several available. I also have several Bubba Grills available, and for the money, that is the best stick burner you can buy. If you find yourself in the Sarasota area, stop in at Pinecrest BBQ Supply. They have a great selection of grills and equipment and are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They have an ice cream company in a trailer out front of their building with some of the best ice cream I have ever had.
If you are in the Naples area, go to our website and see if we have a class on our schedule. We are trying hard to put on a few courses during these wonderful COVID times and hope if things get straightened out, we will have several classes on the schedule. Read your Barbecue News Magazine and shop with as many of the teams and businesses and buy some of their products so you can practice at home with all the spare cooking time you have on your hands. We have purchased all kinds of products and have had a lot of fun experimenting with rubs and sauces.
Big Papa’s has nine different sauces and four rubs available for sale, and you can go to our website and order anything you want to have shipped to you. Our website is bigpapascountrykitchen. com, or you can contact us by email or phone. We look forward to times shortly when we can all get together and enjoy our BBQ and steak cooking days like they used to be!
Good luck and good health to all and cook people some BBQ- it makes them happy.
See everyone on the BBQ trail soon!
