5th annual Hot Q’s & Cold Brews pays out largest cash prize pool of any open West Coast BBQ competition four years running
 By Scott Simpson
The 5th annual Hot Q’s and Cold Brews BBQ Championship took place on Sep- tember 21st in the expansive parking lot of Feather Falls Casino, Brewery and Lodge in Oroville, CA.
It was a beautiful warm late summer day to hold a BBQ event! Ben Lobenstein of Fire It Up Events was the organizer with Julie Poe, Ian Schmidt, Mike and Rhonda Santiago handling the KCBS Rep duties. Together they held a very smooth running and successful competition at a beautiful venue in the Sierra Butte country of Northern California.
Forty four teams from California and Ne- vada were in attendance to split one of the largest prize pools of any open KCBS BBQ competition in California. This is the fourth year in a row this event can lay claim to having the largest prize pool in California. Over $25,050 in cash was paid out to the teams! $20,000 in cash was awarded in the four meat categories down to 15th place with another $4000 split be- tween GC and RGC. If that weren’t enough, there were three wildcard prizes given out. All the teams that didn’t win any contest cash had their names put into a hat and three wildcard winners were chosen to have their $350 event fee re- funded! The People’s Choice money was split with 75% going back to the teams and the other 25% donated to local youth and High School programs. The teams who didn’t participate in the People’s Choice contest were asked to donate their competition leftovers to be sold off “bake sale” style by the local nonprofits. The local youth and high school programs

also benefited from the sales of t-shirts and beer to the public. Even the judges were beneficiaries of the event’s generos- ity with a goody/swag bag given to all judges which contained some very nice gifts.
On display in the parking lot was a collec- tion of restored military vehicles and air- craft from local veterans which included jeeps, troop transports (Including a 2 Star General sedan), all-terrain vehicles and a helicopter.
At the end of the day Cynical BBQ was crowned the Grand Champion of the event. It was the second pro competition win in a row for Craig Yeszin of Cynical BBQ having just GC’d a month earlier at the Lassen BBQ Cookoff in Susanville, CA. Rock’s Barbque took Reserve Grand Champion and Bone Rubbin BBQ took 3rd place overall.
