with thick notebooks of, what I would assume, were infor- mation about cases they would use as back-up for their questions. If this wasn’t enough, they each had assistants behind them with more notebooks and other papers for ad- ditional questions. When the cameras would focus on Amy Comey Barrett she was there with her husband and seven kids behind her. The line of questioning which had me both laughing and in awe, was when one of the senators ask her what she had in front of her. She revealed a simple notepad (actual paper) which was completely blank except for the United States Senate letterhead.
What this showed me was the power of knowledge. It brought home to me the old Saturday morning commer- cials, “Knowledge is Power.” Knowing your subject, your job or the skills it takes to do a task sets you up as an expert in your field. As an expert, those with less knowledge know they can look to you for answers to their questions, which will help them to grow. A person who seeks knowledge is always learning and humble enough to change their minds when more information is brought to light.
Prepared
Knowledge doesn’t just happen however, as much as we all wish it did. It always comes with preparation. All over the
news were interviews with those who sat with Ms. Barrett helping her to prepare for the intensive line of questioning she was about to undergo. This prep was years in the mak- ing from law school to internships to clerking to experience as a judge and teacher. Then there were the immediate tasks of preparing for this hearing specifically. As it was re- vealed what she did to prepare, all the above was made even more clear. The value of preparation was not lost of this Supreme Court nominee.
The trouble with preparing for something is, it can seem tedious and just not “glamourous” for some. However, a leader, knows the value of this prep work. Look at the mili- tary for instance. They go through weeks of training to pre- pare them for what could come their way in a conflict. It’s not fun nor is it rushed but it is essential. Many want to rush through the preparation process, but success depends on taking the time necessary.
These four simple lessons should be applied to all of us as we move toward growth and success. This also showed me one more lesson. We can find value in anything if we are looking for it. I found these four lessons from a “boring” supreme court nominee hearing. What can you learn as you look around?
