The 31st Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue was fun, awesome, and “wicked good,” to borrow a popular New England expression. For example, somebody saw a Tennessee Wonder Woman excitedly devouring a “Lobstah Roll” made with fresh Maine lobster
meat tossed with Duke’s mayo sprinkled with a flavor burst of DennyMike’s Pixie Dust nestled in a hot dog- style lobster roll bun & shredded Iceberg lettuce. Imagine such a scene in a small Tennessee town more than a thousand miles of hills and hollows from the Maine lobster industry!
Maine Lobster Rolls are scarce in Lynchburg, Ten- nessee, but whiskey isn’t at the home of the most fa- mous whiskey in the world. But how about barbecue? Legend has it that Mr. Daniel loved barbecue, so it is only fitting that in a small town the size of Lynchburg there are two barbecue restau- rants, and even more signifi- cantly, one of the most prestigious barbecue compe- titions on the planet, bear- ing Mr. Daniel’s name, takes place in Lynchburg on the fourth Saturday of October every year, rain or shine.
Before we get to the annual informal Saturday night Krystal Burgers Party, let’s review a few unique
traditions at The Jack.
Magic Hickory Nuts

DECEMBER 2019
This tradition is almost as old as The Jack. Here’s the drill: a designated team member from each Invita-
tional team was invited to reach into a home-sewn Jack Daniel’s bandana bag and pull out one Magic
Hickory Nut that was mari- nated in a special blend of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Ten- nessee Whiskey, secret bar- becue seasonings & Kansas City water. Teams were en- couraged to take good care of their nut and do their best to add more magic. Thanks to a genius idea from Den- nyMike Sherman several years ago, each Magic Hick- ory Nut is screen-printed in color with the official con- test logo. Last year the nuts were stained purple to com- memorate the 30th Anniver- sary of The Jack. Stay tuned for the Golden Anniversary in 2038. These nuts have be- come treasured collector’s items. Imagine the stories thousands of Magic Hickory Nuts from almost three decades could tell if they could talk!
