 NBBQA Gatherings Continue to Recognize Excellence in the Business of BBQ
With the almost monthly regional networking gatherings of NBBQA members one thing that has almost become a staple is the recognition of those who have excelled in BBQ. Since last month we have had three such events during which two we have applauded the success of some BBQ legends.
During the World Food Championship in Dallas, TX, many NBBQA
members and non-members gathered to honor Malcom Reed who has
turned his hobby into his business. On the competition circuit we know
Malcom as leader of the Killer Hogs BBQ team but more recently, he is
developing a huge following with his YouTube channel, “How to BBQ Right.” In what started o昀 as a hobby to teach others how to excel in BBQ has turned into his job, which he is ok with. During his speech he mentioned his love for the NBBQA and the role it has played through the years in helping him excel in his passion.
In 1968 Floyd “Sonny” Tillman opened his 昀rst restaurant in Gainesville, Florida and “Sonny’s BBQ” was born. Starting with a homemade pit, he quickly partnered with Southern Pride and more stores opened their doors. In the past 50 years in Florida and the Southeast, BBQ restaurants have used Sonny’s BBQ as the standard in which to be successful in the BBQ business. During the Chimney Cartel’s the Steak Will Shine Showdown, the NBBQA recognized Sonny’s continual pursuit of excellence in the BBQ restaurant business.
