There are some times in life when things
just seem to fall into place and magic
happens. Such is the case with The Tail-
gate Guys BBQ podcast. For hosts Lyndal
Scranton and Steve Koehler, it started
more than 20 years ago in an innocent,
pre-9/11 world. These two gents were not
only neighbours, but worked together as
sports commentators. As with all good
partnerships, they started a competitive
BBQ team and have cooked at KCBS and
SCA competitions alongside the greats
such as Joe Pearce of Slaps BBQ, Travis
Clark of Clark Crew BBQ, and David
Bouska of Butcher BBQ. The highlight of
their competitive BBQ career has been
winning first place Pork in a 2019 KCBS
round against the reigning KCBS Team of the Year and 14 other Top Ten KCBS finishes to back it up.
In 2016, the heavens opened and Scarnton and Koehler landed the dream gig. They got their own radio show, as The Tailgate Guys. In three years on the air, they put out 154 episodes of BBQ glory, drawing on their experience as backyard BBQ guys, competitors, and commentators. Since this time, they’ve released another 84 episodes of weekly BBQ podcast goodness straight to your ear- buds as The Tailgate Guys Podcast.
Episodes are an hour in length and are released weekly. Scranton and Koehler take a unique position on their delivery. Despite
being award winning Pitmasters them- selves, they take the position of ‘Average (BBQ) Joe’ and seek to share the wisdom of the BBQ greats with their audience. Episodes typically start with Scranton and Koehler discussing their weekly BBQ adventures before diving into interviews with two very special BBQ guests and then closing out with some wider sports conversation.
Scranton’s personal favourite episode comes from May 2020 where they had a particularly touching deep dive with the one and only Tuffy Stone. Tuffy spoke on the COVID pandemic, the cancelation of Memphis in May and the passing of his

father, George Stone who had been by his side for most of his ac- complishments. This was a truly touching episode and spoke to the core of not only Tuffy, but the degree of commitment and car- ing that The Tailgate Guys take to the BBQ scene.
