Tabb was also one of the founders
of the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music
Festival that started back in 1994.
The festival began as a fundraiser
for the local Chamber of Com-
merce in his hometown of Tryon,
NC. It was a cook-off that at-
tracted the public masses and the
best barbecue teams across the
world. Jim wanted to share his
love of barbecue with his home-
town and this event enabled him
to do just that. The contest fea-
tured the regular four KCBS event
entries, with the added "Anything
Butt" ancillary contest on Friday
night. They were also able to add
a whole hog contest to the festival
as well. The event was held
through 2009. Even today people
recall their experiences during
conversations about their experiences of that event. The Chamber made the decision to go a different route after 16 years. The can-
celing of the festival caused sig- nificant disappointment for many cooks and judges who had faith- fully attended for years.
In 2009, Jim became the primary mentor for the FLB (Future Leg- ends of BBQ), a kids-only BBQ competition. This event was also a benefit for the Henderson County Young Leaders Program in Tuxedo, NC. This event was held through 2013 and taught many kids how barbecue at any age can equal fun. One of the lessons Jim taught these kids was that "good things come to those who wait" — a lesson Jim Tabb learned while learning his barbecue skillset that started back in the 1950s.
Jim "Trimm" Tabb was definitely dedicated to all things barbecue. This BBQ gentleman will indeed be missed by many but never for-
gotten by those who experi- enced his barbecue ways. James Winn Tabb passed on Monday, January 27, 2020, from cancer. He is survived by his wife Kathleen Rose (Costello) Tabb; and his first wife Joan (Maffei) Tabb the mother of his daughters Lee Ann Elizabeth Whippen, and Diane Margaret Berglund; grandchildren: Britney Eliza- beth Matz, Samantha Lee Whippen, Taylor Winn Berglund, Vaughn William Berglund; great-grand-daugh- ter Charlotte Elizabeth Matz; his nephews Robert Peyton Tabb IV, George William Tabb, Richard Barham Tabb, and John Charles Tabb, and their spouses, children, and grand- children.
