 CALIFORNIA BBQ
ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES
YEARLY AWARDS AT THE GOLDEN STATE BATTLE II
By Donna Fong
For the last two years, the CBBQA has combined its annual awards dinner with a KCBS sanctioned contest. The first of the two events started Friday, January 24, at Casa de Fruta in Hollister with a nighttime potluck followed by the awards ceremony. Snake River Farms (SRF) took the entrée spotlight with a deliciously well marbled strip steak. Recipients for the Presidential Service awards were CBBQA treasurer Jim Kirch- ner, Golden State Battle contest organ- izer Jim Palmer, and SRF Business Development Manager Annella Kelso. The CBBQA Judge of the Year award was renamed in honor of long time KCBS Representatives, Kelley and Kathleen McIntosh. The McIntosh CBJoY award was given to MCBJs Scott Simpson for his mentorship of teams and as a BBQ instructor/ambassador and Scott Shi- mano for his work supporting the CBBQA

This year’s youngest winner was Daniel Son of Smokin’ Mokers who took home the top prize for Kids Q Team of the Year. He clocks in at the tender age of 5. An- drew Steinmetz of Clear Blue BBQ was named The Rookie of the Year.
And for the first time, but to no one’s surprise, Jerry and Lupe Aguilar of Burnin and Lootin took home the Team of Year perpetual trophy. They had an amazing 2019 coming in 7th nationally in the KCBS ToY, winning 6 Grand Cham- pionships and traveling as far as Perth, Australia to compete.
The inductees into our BBQ Hall of Fame were the last to be introduced. Hayward Harris accepted a HoF trophy on behalf of his late wife, Eva Harris. Together, they were the Rib Doctor team and among the first judges, cooks and reps in California.
Tammy and Dale Ginos of When Pigs Fly were inducted into the HoF for their work as organizers of one of California’s longest running contests, their contribu- tion to the board and their mentorship of teams.
Patty Fisher Sharpe of Sharpe Gourmet Cooking Wood was honored as an in- ductee for her longtime support of the
