Assist Program was born. The decision to focus on hospice patients and their families was easy. Everyone has had moments of hardship where additional help could have made a difference. Now, our voluntary team of firefighter/ paramedics is always ready to help out, no matter the time of day or the size of the task. We work side by side with hospice to ensure that we meet all the needs of patients and their families. We meet frequently with patients
and their loved ones, building relationships that help to overcome people’s natural reluctance to ask for help. Our friendly team works to build rapport so we can begin giving assistance.
The relationships we form with patients and their families enable us to help in many ways. Our team frequently provides lift assists and help with moving patients. We have installed gates, replaced sump pumps and pumped water
out of flooded basements, rearranged furniture, and cleared garages to make them easier to navigate. We once helped a man get outside and enjoy a sunny afternoon in the boat
that was parked in his driveway. We tidied up the perimeter of a pond so a patient could sit beside it again. We install reusable ramps and handrails so patients with limited mobility can more safely navigate their homes or even get outside. The ways in which we can help are truly as diverse as the people in our community. Everyone needs different things during this most difficult of times, and NAP is here to meet those needs.
We cannot stop time, but we can make sure our time together is well spent. Time is crucial at the end of life
and the Neighbor Assist Program allows members of our community to focus on the quality of that time, and not worry about mundane tasks that threaten to chip away at it.
