Running the Long Race
So much has been written about COVID-19 and its impact on every aspect of life in 2020. Now as we enter a new year with (hopefully) the finish line in sight, where do we as an organization go from here? What have we learned about OPTA that can position us well into the future?

A Note from the Executive Director Victoria Gresh, CAE
A FEW OBSERVATIONS:
• We are a resilient organization that can quickly and effectively pivot when necessary
• We are not afraid to embrace new technologies and learn as we go
• We can provide conferences both in-person and virtual, giving our members multiple options with meaningful content throughout the year
• We still have a strong legislative voice, even if it’s over Zoom
• We can successfully work from almost anywhere
• We’ve been exceptionally smart with our member dollars, sustaining us through the membership deferrals of 2020
Like many of our members, I am a runner. The pandemic has reminded me of running one of my half marathons, where I’m halfway there on mile six somewhere, mentally complaining but keeping my head down and still running—knowing I will finish eventually. I optimistically signed up last
year for the Disney Half Marathon scheduled for February 2021 in Orlando, since it was the weekend immediately preceding APTA’S CSM. Perfect, I thought, I’ll get my bling and then head over to CSM. We all know how that worked out. Due to Ohio weather (and lack of open facilities along
any close recreational trail due to COVID), I ended up running the half marathon ON MY TREADMILL. Fortitude is a word that is now in regular rotation in my vocabulary.
We all just keep going just a little bit longer, mentally strong, knowing that we’re going to get that medal! We can do this!
