HAPPY CENTENNIAL BIRTHDAY, APTA! #APTA100
This year we celebrate 100 years of APTA!
Our cover photo for this article of ACCESS Magazine features a photo submission from our Where’s Mary? photo challenge that took place during the week leading up to Founders’ Day on January 15.
On January 15, 1921, APTA’s founders met at Keens Chophouse in New York City. The participants decided to create an association with the name American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association.
On March 24, 1921, Mary McMillan was elected the first president of the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association, which later changed its name to the American Physical Therapy Association we know today. The OPTA created this Where’s Mary? photo challenge to ensure that Mary’s efforts to lead are not forgotten, but rather continue to push the APTA and the OPTA into the future.
We had a tie in our Where’s Mary? Challenge! The two winning submissions were from Kendra Lucas, PT, DPT and Lori Wahl, PT, DPT! Thank you to everyone that participated in this fun project! It was exciting to see all the love for our APTA Founders!
The OPTA is taking part in the APTA Centennial Scholars Program which is designed to build future association leaders at both the chapter/section/academy and national levels. Demonstrating APTA’s investment in the sustainability of the association as it begins its next 100 years, the program will support our collective quest for a diverse and prepared leadership pool.

We are happy to announce that Caroline Brunst, PT, DPT has been selected to represent our chapter at the national level to help prepare the APTA and the OPTA for the NEXT 100 years! As her capstone project, Dr. Brunst is working with our Early Professional SIG to build upon the OPTA CONNECT mentoring program. We are excited to see the results of this project!
Our celebration of the APTA Centennial continues all year, with upcoming special events such as a special APTA Centennial Gala at the Washington National Cathedral, the year-long APTA Centennial Lecture Series, and many more! Check out the APTA website for a full list of events.
Giving back to the community has always been a pillar of APTA and the Ohio Chapter. We look forward to September 22, where we will close the centennial by participating in 100 Days of Service! We hope you will do something to make a difference in those final 100 days of the year—but don’t feel limited to that window. Any community service during our centennial year is welcome and contributes to our goal to make a positive impact on society in this special year.
The OPTA is proud to join APTA in this celebration! We look forward to seeing our efforts, dedication, and service push our organization and profession into the future.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, APTA! #APTA100
