NEW HOUSE SPEAKER FINALLY SELECTED
After the resignation of Speaker Cliff Rosenberger in April, which was a result of him being under investigation by the FBI, the Ohio House of Representatives elected a new Speaker of the House . There had already been jockeying going on for who would be the Speaker in 2019, as Rosenberger was term limited . Representative Ryan Smith and former Speaker Larry Householder are thought to be contenders for Speaker in 2019 . Smith put his name forward to be Speaker for the remainder of 2018 . However, Householder did not present himself as a candidate at this time . Instead, Householder supported term limited Representative Andy Thompson to serve as Speaker for the remainder of 2018 .
On June 6, 2018, the House finally returned to session to vote on a new Speaker. Because of procedural rules regarding the Speaker vote when no candidate has a majority, it took 11 separate voice votes before the issue was decided. That final vote resulted in Representative Ryan Smith being elected Speaker of the House for the remainder of 2018. The final vote count was: 44 votes for Smith, 27 votes for Minority Leader Fred Strahorn (D), 13 votes for Representative Andy Thompson (R), and 7 votes for Representative Jim Hughes (R) .
