We, the members of the Research Committee, feel that we have made progresses significantly in several areas of what we have done during the first half of 2022. Here is the list of what we have accomplished or is in process to be accomplished.
We have maintained conference call meeting every odd month with participants in the range of 7-12 people in each meeting, discussing the matters related to research. During the January meeting,
we reviewed our strategic goals and discussed potential educational topics for training sessions. At the March meeting, Ashley Simons shared subtopics to be included in her webinar to be held in May.
At the May meeting, Abraham Lee informed the members of Amu DeSilva’s volunteering to serve the committee as one of the co-chairs. During our July meeting, we reviewed the responses of participants who attended training webinar and discussed strategies to enhance the quality of the newsletter.
NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION
To inform of research activities and new knowledge obtained from research at state and national levels, we have published the newsletter two times a
year, highlighting the results of published research articles or the research projects of investigators who received research grants from OPTA. In the May 2022 issue, we included a research abstract
of a study, The Effects of a Four Week Home Yoga Program on the Core Strength and Endurance of Healthy Adults, submitted by Nicole Schroeder et al., a research-funded project. Abraham Lee contributed an article entitled What is a P-Value? The article addresses a fundamental statistical concept of
a p-value, which is involved in the analysis of
a given set of data. He illustrated critically the concept of a p-value with an example and pointed
THE COMMITTEE HAS WORKED WITH FOUR STRATEGIC GOALS:
1. PROMOTING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
2. ACKNOWLEDGING AND REWARDING INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED IN RESEARCH
3. FACILITATING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
4. COMMUNICATING RESEARCH RESULTS AND/OR RESEARCH PROCESSES

out common misinterpretations of a p-value by addressing incorrect elements involved in them. At the July committee meeting, the committee decided to include peer-reviewed articles to be published in the newsletter to improve the quality of articles. We formed a group of peer reviewers for the evaluation of articles.
TRAINING ON RESEARCH
PROCESS
To promote research activities among PTs and PTAs, we have offered free webinar sessions on research. Ashley Simons taught how to analyze data in during her May webinar, covering various statistical techniques. Attendants provided very positive comments on the session and expressed their desire to see other topics in future sessions. We
are appreciative of Ashley’s effort. We anticipate the committee may offer another webinar training session in remaining months of 2022.
GRANT PROPOSAL RECEPTION
AND REVIEW
One of important activities carried by the committee is to review research proposals submitted by investigators and to make decisions on a few projects to get supported with research funds from the OPTA. We received the record number (10) of research proposals in 2021. We expect many proposals in the year of 2022 as well and accepted proposals will
be evaluated by reviewers based on the established criteria for the determination of proposal support with OPTA research funds. All grant recipients will be recognized at OPTA’s fall conference in September.
