Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience is APTA’s Vision Statement for the Physical Therapy Profession APTA supports physical therapist efforts to create, implement, evaluate, and lead new initiatives to introduce population health approaches to transform society The guiding principles to achieve the vision include facilitating movement as a key to optimal quality of life for all people that extends beyond health to every person’s ability to participate in and contribute to society The multifaceted needs of the community, such as those resulting from a sedentary lifestyle, call for our profession to engage with consumers to lessen preventable health care costs and overcome barriers to participation in society
OPTimize: OPTA’s Lecture Series and Research Showcase on Population Health & Movement will focus on the evidence to support physical therapy practice and interventions for population health and movement across the continuum— including all portions of the lifespan and in all practice areas.
What is population health? According to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, “Population health is de ned as
the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group These groups are often geographic populations such as nations or communities, but can also be other groups such as employees, ethnic groups, [individuals with disabilities], prisoners, or any other de ned group.”
Physical therapy professionals continue to provide essential individual interventions related to health and disease However, population health topics are becoming increasingly important
in our evolving healthcare landscape, especially those that can be positively affected by movement
OPTA is now accepting Evidence-based presentation proposals on topics related to physical therapist practice focusing on population health and the following principles to demonstrate how the profession and society can create systems that optimize movement and function for all people: (Please refer to APTA’s Vision for more details.)
Identity – promoting the movement system as the foundation for optimizing movement to improve the health of society Recognition and validation of the movement system are essential to understanding the structure, function, and potential of the human body
Quality - establishing and adopting best population health practice standards across the domains of practice, education, and research as the individuals in these domains endeavor to be exible, prepared, and responsive in a dynamic and ever- changing world
Collaboration - demonstrating the value of collaboration with other health care providers, consumers, community organizations, and other disciplines to solve population health-related challenges of our society
Value - ensuring the population health services that the physical therapy profession will provide will be safe, effective, patient/client-centered, timely, ef cient, and equitable; and outcomes will be both meaningful to patients/clients and cost- effective
Innovation - offering creative and proactive solutions to enhance population health services delivery and to increase the value of physical therapy to society
Consumer-centricity – providing that patient/client/ consumer values and goals will be central to population health efforts in which the physical therapy profession will engage
Access/Equity - recognizing health inequities and disparities and working to ameliorate them through innovative models
of population health service delivery, advocacy, attending
to the in uence of the social determinants of health on the consumer, collaborating with community entities, serving as a point of entry to the healthcare system, and direct outreach to consumers
Advocacy - advocating for patients/clients/consumers both as individuals and as a population, in practice, education, and research settings to manage and endorse change, adopt best practice approaches, and ensure that population health systems are built to be consumer-centered I
