SUCCESS STORIES
Arunachalam Muruganantham is credited
for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India through his innovative low-cost sanitary pad making machine. The innovation has been implemented not only in remote locations in the country but also in about 100 countries.
Mallesham Laxminarayana Chinthakindi did an outstanding service to weavers in Telangana by mechanizing the process of weaving Pochampalli silk by inventing Laxmi Asu Making Machine, an
innovative device named after his mother, whose problems inspired him to innovate.
His work removed the capacity constraints of Pochampalli sari
industry. It generated immense livelihood opportunities – many
women set up ‘Asu machine centres’, thus preventing the
slow decay of the ‘Tie & Dye’ tradition and industry.
Mansukhbhai Jagani is well-known for his innovation Bullet Santi – a useful agricultural device for small landholding farmers. NIF and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) jointly pursued the Society of Automotive Engineers Inc. (SAE), USA, for the allotment of the World Manufacturer Index (WMI) Code on behalf of the innovator and two manufacturers. Today, over 200 fabricators are making derivative versions of Bullet Santi, with over 15,000 deployed in the farms.
Prakash Singh Raghuvanshi, a farmer from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is credited with developing improved varieties of wheat, paddy, mustard and pigeon pea. These varieties have been widely disseminated and have received an excellent
