Outreach and Scientific Social Responsibility:
SERB has adopted Scientific Social Responsibility Policy (SERB-SSR) to imbibe a culture of
social commitment among SERB grantees. The policy intends to effectively utilize scientific infrastructure and expertise of SERB grantees,
to benefit S&T stakeholders, especially the less- endowed researchers and the society. Accelerate Vigyan (SERB-AV) strives to provide a big push to high-end scientific research and prepare scientific manpower, which can venture into research career and percolate into knowledge- based economy.
SUCCESS STORIES
Identifying Treatable Metabolic Disorders in Newborns: SERB has
supported a feasibility study on new- born screening for treatable genetic
disorders and epidemiologic data generation for inborn metabolic
errors in Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. The project
involved screening of 200,000
new-borns for five treatable disorders across
20 hospitals in the state of Delhi, between 2014-2017. Building upon its success, training programmes were imparted to biochemists and public health staff of Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. The outcome of this study culminated into a mission named ‘Neonatal Early Evaluation Vision’ (NEEV). NEEV focuses on tackling visible functional and metabolic defects in babies and screens neonates for three common treatable metabolic disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism (CH), Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and thalassemia.
Cyber Security and Defense of Critical Infrastructures: The Intensification of Research in High Priority Areas (IRHPA) programme of SERB supports research where multidisciplinary approaches are involved. The emphasis of high priority programmes, such as IRHPA is on building a robust interdisciplinary connect for addressing critical national challenges.
