PIONEERING A NEW FUTURE 131
NEW INITIATIVES
To fulfill the needs of users and various government agencies, Survey of India has taken some new initiatives, including:
Manchitra: A portal ‘Manchitra’ was launched, wherein the Open Series Maps in pdf formats have been made available.
Survey of India Portal:
SoI has developed two web-based geo-portal applications – ‘indiamaps. gov.in’ and ‘g2g. indiamaps.gov.in’ – for public and government users. These web-based applications offer National Topographical Data
Base (NTDB) as map application or web service to various users.
Mobile App – Sahyog:
Survey of India (SoI) has launched a mobile application ‘Sahyog’ for its users to voluntarily support and
contribute in
preparing,
updating
and
enriching
the national
database
of the
country.
Framework of Coordinates: Survey of India played a crucial role in national building just after Independence by providing accurate framework of coordinates, maps which could form the basis for various projects such as the Bhakra Dam, Bhilai Steel Project, Nagarjuna Sagar Project and Narmada Project.
Mapping: By the year 1976, Survey of India had completed the mapping of entire country in 1:50,000 scale. After advent of computer technology, Survey of India initiated digitization of the maps. Now all the maps are available in digital format also.
Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure (DSSDI) Project: Under this project, Survey of India prepared a 3D-GIS & Land Information System for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The large-scale mapping data was generated using aerial photography.
SCHEMES & FACILITIES
National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG):
Namami Gange Programme is an Integrated Conservation Mission approved as ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014 to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of Pollution and Conservation &
rejuvenation of the River Ganga. Survey of India is generating High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and GIS data for the part of River Ganga covering up to 10km extent on both sides using latest technology.
National Hydrology Project: Project to improve the extent, quality and accessibility of water resources as well as flood forecasting and reservoir observations in real time. Survey of India, is developing High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of Ganga basin upto 5 km from River banks using Airborne-LIDAR technology under this World bank aided project. GIS data under these projects is being generated using High resolution Satellite Imageries (HRSI) for various river basins covering 800,000 km2 area of the country.
Large-scale Mapping for State Governments:
SOI has undertaken large-scale mapping projects using professional grade UAV for the various states/organizations.
SVAMITVA: Svamitva scheme of Ministry of Panchayati Raj was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 24th April 2020 for mapping of rural abadi areas with no Cadastral records, for all villages in the country.
