and radicals (for example, OH, HO2, RO2) using highly sensitive instruments. Vertical profiling of ozone and meteorological parameters are collected on a routine basis and more frequently on events basis. Water vapour profiling up to the middle stratosphere is an important component for climate change studies, particularly over the Himalayan region. For these purposes, ARIES also hosts various other instruments, like multi-wavelength solar radiometer. All these facilities, serve as a climatic reference for this region and would be an important input for the climate studies.
INFRASTRUCTURE & RESOURCES
To meet engineering and technical requirements of the institute, ARIES hosts workshops and
laboratories related to electronic, mechanical, and optical maintenance of the instruments
and observational facilities. ARIES being remotely located maintains a certain level of self-dependency with the help of its own technical expertise to meet daily needs related to the maintenance of the
facilities at Manora Peak and Devasthal. ARIES also has a computer centre
with dedicated optical-fiber link and a high bandwidth internet link with
National Knowledge Network (NKN) to run a network of around 100 computers used for scientific data analysis. ARIES also has a well-maintained Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC)/library with more than 10,000 volumes of research journals and an excellent collection of books on astronomy & astrophysics and atmospheric sciences..
DOCTORAL & POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAMMES
ARIES offers fellowships to pursue PhD in several diverse areas including astronomy, astrophysics
and atmospheric sciences. ARIES selects students
as research scholars via the JEST, NET and GATE exams. The organization also offers postdoctoral fellowships in any branch of astronomy, astrophysics and atmospheric sciences. It also offers visiting positions to work in engineering and instrumentation, or software development departments.
VISITING STUDENTS PROGRAMME
Apart from regular PhD programme, ARIES also has two more training programmes mainly for students (graduates and postgraduates from other institutes/ universities) involved in various projects supervised by ARIES faculty members. The summer project students programme aims at spotting young talented
