Originally established by the Government of Kerala as an advanced centre for medical specialties, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology
(SCTIMST) has metamorphosed into an institution of national importance with the status of a university in 1980 under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, by an Act
of Parliament (Act 52 of 1980).
SCTIMST inherited its name from
the Royal House of Travancore that
gifted its original building to the people
in 1972 to mark the sixtieth birthday of Maharaja Chitra Tirunal. A year later, the Government of Kerala under the leadership of Chief Minister Achutha Menon, made
a major decision to establish SCTIMST and later an extraordinary step of placing the new
institution under the administrative jurisdiction
of the Department of Science and Technology was taken. The institute comprises a hospital wing,
a Biomedical Technology wing and the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies. Excellent research and teaching facilities are available at these centres. This uniquely poised institute has a
dedicated team of clinicians, scientists and engineers devoted to quality biomedical research and developing technologies in healthcare with emphasis on cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
