Vigyan Prasar
Adhering to the constitutional
mandate of nurturing and inculcating a scientific temperament and promoting rational outlook, Vigyan Prasar (VP), with SCoPE (Science Communication, Popularization,
and Extension) as its mandate, has been active on every possible communications platform from print to electronic to digital to social media. This creative and cross-disciplinary, and effective, platform enables dialogue and knowledge transfer and has helped
put Indian science on the global science map.
SCoPE has also found a reflection in the
in the STIP 2020 draft, a landmark policy
initiative by the Government of India. The
draft emphasizes science communication in
Indian languages with local and hyper-local
contexts for last-mile connectivity. Vigyan
Prasar, for the past two years, has been popularizing science, in various Indian languages. An overview

are telecast through various
channels including Doordarshan
National channel, RSTV channel, LSTV channel, regional kendras of Doordarshan and various social mediums. Vigyan Prasar launched two important initiatives on 15 January 2020: (i) DD-Science − a one-hour daily dedicated slot (5
pm to 6 pm) from Monday to Saturday on Doordarshan National Channel; and, (ii) India Science (www.indiascience.in) − an Internet- based 24×7 science TV channel. The ISC programmes can be accessed by downloading the India Science app from Google Play Store or through www.indiascience.in. Leveraging on the far-reaching effect of social mediums,
Vigyan Prasar’s programmes can be accessed through Facebook (Indiascience TV Channel) and YouTube (India Science).
