A glimpse of the rich heritage of India
Survey work being conducted in Antarctica
for Indian Air Force, topography of rivers, maps for disaster mitigation, forests, cantonments and other large-scale maps for special purposes are part of
it. This also includes surveying and mapping for citizen-centric developmental projects.
Administrative Boundaries includes International and inter-state boundaries. International Boundary Survey involves survey/demarcation/relocation, preparation of International Boundary Strip Maps, depiction of correct external boundaries of India on maps, scrutiny and certification of correct external boundaries/coastlines of India on maps published by other agencies, advice on International Boundary matters to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Inter-state Boundary (ISB) involves survey/ demarcation/relocation, preparation of IB Strip Maps, advice on ISB matters to MHA/ Supreme Court/High Court/Other courts. Survey of India prepares administrative boundaries data up to village level. Its mandate includes demarcation of hazard line along Indian coasts as per Coastal Regulation Zone Notification dated 2 July 2018, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Toponomy is another key mandate which involves providing standardized geographical names duly verified in the field to MHA, in matters pertaining to new/change of place names/railway station names across the country.
MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Maps prepared by Survey of India serve as
an important input for decision making for developmental planning, defence, security, disaster management and a number of other fields.
Many a times, the Supreme Court or state High Courts have directed the Survey of India to carry out special surveys which have provided important inputs for settling cases. The heights provided by Survey of India have played a key role in planning and executing irrigation projects. SoI has redefined and launched the beta version of the new Indian Vertical Datum (IVD2009) in the year 2018 based on precise field gravity values, high precision levelling and decade long tidal observations in line
