Planning the 2022 Show
The Hobart Showground is taking bookings for all its usual activities up until the end of September this year.
By then, the development application is expected to have been officially approved, and clearance of the 12ha site will commence, including many buildings which are now too old to warrant upgrading.
It means that for the next three years, the Royal Hobart Show will need to find a new, temporary home, while the development proceeds. Regular activities at the Showground will re- locate, or there may be opportunities to accommodate some of them on different parts of the Showground.
The new Showground precinct will be the first element of the redevelopment to occur, and other stages,
including private and affordable accommodation, will follow that.
This year, the traditional October Show week will be split into three events, with the first to occur as a farewell to the old Showground at the end of July, and the other two elements to occur across the state.
Event 1: Animal competitions covering poultry, alpacas, cavies, carnival rides, and food outlets. This will be combined with Tasmania’s ‘biggest ever garage
sale’, as everything from filing cabinets to window frames and roofing materials goes on sale ahead of the demolition of old structures and the commencement of building the new Showground precinct.
Event 2: To occur in the traditional October Show week at several locations:
• Hobart Regatta grounds:
• City Hall, Hobart: Creative crafts, art and youth art.
• Coal Valley Equestrian Centre: equestrian events
Event 3: Campbell Town Showground in northern Tasmania: Sheep, goats and fleece competition to be held at the end of October.
Woodchopping, carnival, entertainment, kennel.
