Circus and show people, back after near-death experiences with Covid-19 lockdowns, find that some towns are thirsting for entertainment.
But some councils, cash-strapped, and insurers, are putting ground rents up, restricting some sites.
At Rosehill, Sydney, construction of a new light rail line has forced circuses to show back at Number Two Carpark, not as good as out the front. Stardust Circus will be there for the mid-year holidays.
Despite late-season floods, Stardust found big houses in April at Nowra, NSW, then Warrawong, then in May, at Manly, the first time they’ve played it.
The new program has goats, Matthew Ezekiel Smith’s new dog act, new comedy car, and new washing-machine gag, in a strong program featuring big flying trapeze act before Interval, and teeterboard fire act to climax the show.
But no lions or monkeys, largely forced by ignorant activists and compliant councils.
With more people in the ring, after a year off the road, it’s still a big show.
In Adelaide, two townies made worldwide notoriety, when they stole Big Bird, believed to have cost $160,000, one of the Hollywood costume characters in Silvers Circus big show at Bonython Park.
