Agricultural Shows Australia
Message from the chair
Our sincere thanks to both Francis Andrews (SA Country Shows) and
Rod Bowles (VIC Ag Shows) for the positive work achieved during their multiple terms serving on the ASA Board. John Rothwell (CEO Adelaide Royal) did not re-stand for his position in 2020. John’s involvement with the concept development, partnerships and operational running of the highly successful inaugural ASA Conference was significant. The Board would
like to thank John’s for his efforts on this project and his dedication and commitment to ASA since the organisation was established.
2020 has been a year like no other
for our Show Societies. The impact of drought, fires and now COVID 19 will no doubt influence each Societies financial position and fundamentally define and change the way AgShows are presented in the future. Cancellations of our large Royal shows, regional shows and ASA’s National Finals scheduled for New Zealand in October 2020 will impact our
industry and stakeholders significantly. ASA Board has been working closely with Minister Littleproud’s office
staff and have submitted a proposal for a Federal Government recovery funding package for all AgShows. We will continue to lobby for Regional and Royal Shows in the hope for a positive outcome.
During these discussions with The Minister’s Office we have also sought clarification as to when the $20M Regional Infrastructure Grants will be announced. We feel this is imminent but are yet to receive a concrete announcement date.
With the cancellation of the 2020 ASA National Finals scheduled to be hosted in New Zealand in October, we will now hold over all National Young Judges, Paraders and Rural Ambassadors
until 2021 National Finals to be held in QLD with exemptions given on age if required.
On a more positive note, I am pleased to see the NSW Government supporting
regional Agricultural Shows after the devasting drought and fires experiences in the state. Earlier in the year each NSW show held in 2020 was able to apply for a sponsorship of $5000 to assist with the running of their show
Following on, the NSW Government last week announced $25M to rebuild and refurbish infrastructure on showgrounds helping to stimulate regional economies, protect vital jobs and support business. I am pleased to see the NSW Government investing in our Agricultural Shows and the importance they play within our communities and industry.
On behalf of the ASA Board and our Member Representatives, I hope
that our vast Agricultural Society and AgShows community is safe and well during these unprecedented times and that as soon as allowable and practical, AgShows will be leading the recovery celebrations across the country.
Dr Rob Wilson Chair, ASA
