Dear Mr. Palmiter:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. For your prescription drug information, I used the same
Medicare file number, drugs, dosages, and quantities that you had earlier entered and
submitted with your questionnaire. I ran the list late yesterday and so the costs should be
current (occasionally there are errors in the Medicare web site during the first month or so of
open enrollment each year as plans collectively upload millions of pieces of data about the
upcoming year’s costs).
Also, as we discussed, you cannot contribute to a Health Savings Account once you get either
Part A or Part B.
On your questionnaire you indicated that you wish to compare Medigap policies as well as
Medicare Advantage plans. But I was unable to find any Advantage plans that are a good match
for you. Most of the plans have high costs for your Rx drugs, and the two Amerivantage HMO
plans that do have reasonable drug costs are not accepted by Summit Medical Group, although
it does accept other Ameriprise plans.
That leaves a Medigap policy in combination with a Part D stand-alone plan as your best
coverage option. Here are the steps to follow to enroll in these plans.
1) The first step is to decide which Medigap plan you want – Plan F, G, N, or High-
Deductible F. Then it’s a good idea to call at least three insurance companies before
deciding which company you will get your policy from. The toll-free numbers of the
insurance companies that are licensed to sell Medigap policies in New Jersey are
shown in Appendix B1. Later in this cover letter I’ll mention some factors to consider
in choosing an insurer.
As you know, your Medigap coverage will not “work” if you don’t have Part B, and so
if for some reason you have to delay your Part enrollment for a month, you will also
want to delay your Medigap policy effective date so that it coincides with your Part
B start date. It’s likely that the insurance company will ask you if you have Part B.
