Dear Raquelle:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. You have probably already enrolled in Part A and Part B
effective August 1 -- but if you have not, you can do so by contacting Social Security at (800)
772-1213 or by enrolling online at ssa.gov.
Because you are not yet receiving Social Security benefits, you will receive a quarterly bill from
Social Security for your Part B premiums. When you eventually do start receiving your Social
Security benefits, your Part B premiums will be deducted from the monthly payments. This year
the standard Part B premium is $144.60 a month, although individuals with higher incomes may
pay more. Your evaluation assumes you will pay the standard Part B premiums.
You indicated that for your supplemental coverage you want to get a Medigap policy and enroll
in a Part D stand-alone plan. Here are the steps you might follow:
To enroll in the stand-alone drug plan, call the plan’s toll-free number shown on
page 4 of the evaluation and in the Rx drug section below. When you call, ask
that your enrollment become effective on August 1, 2020. Once you are
enrolled, you can pay your monthly premiums by check or bank transfer.
Decide which Medigap plan you want – Plan G, Plan N, etc.
Then we suggest you call a minimum of three insurance companies that have low
premiums for the Medigap plan you want. The companies’ premiums are shown
in Appendices B1 - B4, and their toll-free numbers are listed in Appendix B1.
Medigap policies
It might be helpful to review some features that all Medigap policies share (you may already be
aware of these). When you have a Medigap policy and go to the doctor or other medical
provider, the provider sends the bill for your visit to Medicare. Medicare then pays the provider
the amount that’s covered under Part A and Part B. A doctor’s office visit, for example, is
covered by Part B, and so Medicare would pay the doctor 80% of the cost of the visit. Then
Medicare will forward the 20% balance to the Medigap insurance company for payment.
