Dear Patti:
Your Medicare evaluation is attached. You might check the information on the client data sheet
on page 5 to make sure that I entered it correctly. The costs shown in your evaluation are
estimates for the last four months of the 2020 plan year – that’s except for the estimates of
Medigap premiums on pages 6-7, which are annual amounts.
You’ve already completed the first step of your Medicare enrollment by signing up for Part A
and Part B, and you may have received your Medicare card showing that your Part A and Part B
coverage will start on September 1. If not, you should receive it before long.
Your supplemental coverage options
The next step is to choose your supplemental coverage and have it in place by September 1.
Your best option is to get a Medigap policy and a Medicare prescription drug plan, also called a
stand-alone drug plan. During the first 6 months you are enrolled in Part B, you can get a
Medigap policy without answering questions about your health or having to disclose pre-
existing conditions. But after that six-month period has passed, you will have to answer health-
related questions before you can get a Medigap policy.
Here are the steps to follow to enroll in your supplemental coverage:
First, decide which of the two Medigap plans that are compared in your
evaluation you want to get (Plan G or Plan N). Their benefits are similar, although
Plan G’s coverage is more comprehensive.
Second, call at least three insurance companies, whose phone numbers are listed
in Appendix B1, to get current quotes for the Medigap plan you’ve decided to
get. Then you can sign up with one of the companies that has low premiums,
letting them know you want your Medigap coverage to start on September 1.
You should receive your Medigap policy enrollment card in the mail within two
or three weeks.
