Dear Dr. Yesawich:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please verify the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. In most cases, the costs shown in your evaluation are
estimates for the 2021 plan year.
After your Part B coverage begins on January 1, your Part B premiums will be deducted from
your monthly Social Security checks. If you haven’t already done so, you can enroll in Part B by
calling (800) 772-1213 and asking that your Part B coverage start on January 1. You should
receive your Medicare card within two or three weeks after you call. You can also enroll online
at ssa.gov or can schedule a conference at a nearby Social Security office, but it’s usually easiest
to enroll by phone.
You will pay your Part D premiums directly to the plan you enroll in, although if you pay the
higher income-related premiums you will be billed for those surcharges by Medicare.
Your supplemental coverage options
Your questionnaire indicates that you want to consider Medicare Advantage plans, but as I
mentioned in an e-mail, you may also want to consider Medigap policies. Regardless of the
option you choose, because you are past your initial Medicare eligibility period (when you
turned 65), when you enroll you will be asked to provide documentation that you have health
insurance based on current employment and that it includes creditable Rx drug coverage.
Depending on the type of coverage you choose, your enrollment steps are as follows:
To enroll in either of the Advantage plans in your evaluation, call the plan you
want to enroll in and tell the representative you speak with that you want your
coverage to begin January 1. When you enroll in either plan, you will also be
enrolling in Part D. You should receive your enrollment card within a couple of
weeks. The plans’ phone numbers are on pages 2-3 of the evaluation.
If you decide to get a Medigap policy, you will need to do several things to
complete your enrollment, as follows:
