Dear Mr. Novotny:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. Because your coverage will go into effect on August 1, you
should enroll in your supplemental plan(s) no later than mid-July. That way, you will have your
enrollment cards by the first of the year.
In most cases, the evaluation shows the estimated costs for the 2018 plan year, even though
you will be enrolled for only the last five months of the year. After you’ve reviewed the
materials and decided on the coverage you want, you can enroll in one of the following ways:
If you decide to enroll in an Advantage plan, you can either call 800-MEDICARE
to enroll or you can call the plan’s toll-free number, shown on pages 3-4 of your
evaluation.
If you decide to get a Medigap policy and a Part D stand-alone plan, you can
enroll in the Part D plan by calling 800-MEDICARE or by calling the plan’s toll-free
enrollment number, shown on page 4 of your evaluation. Before getting a
Medigap policy, it’s a good idea to call a minimum of three insurance companies
for quotes before deciding which company you will buy from. The companies’
phone numbers are shown in Appendix B1.
You indicated in your questionnaire that you would like to see comparisons of Advantage plans
and Medigap policies. Your evaluation compares two Medigap plans (G and K) and two
Medicare Advantage HMO plans.
Medigap policies
It might help to review some features that all Medigap policies share (you may already be
aware of these). Medigap policies can be purchased during the first six months you have Part A
and Part B without having to answer health-related questions. In California, however, insurance
companies can adjust premiums for age, gender, and smoking status.
