Dear Mr. O’Connell:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. Also, verify that the attached list of your Rx drugs, dosages,
and monthly quantities is accurate.
It would be a good idea to acquire your Medigap policy and enroll in the Part D stand-alone
plan in the next 10 days or so. That way you will have your membership cards by November 1.
You are not subject to the fall open enrollment period that begins October 15 and ends
December 7, which is for people who are already enrolled and want to change plans.
In most cases the costs shown in your evaluation are for the 2019 plan year. Medicare has not
yet announced how much the Part B premiums, Part B deductible and other cost-sharing will be
for 2019, and so on pages 3, 6, and 7 the 2018 amounts were used. Also, the out-of-pocket limit
for Plan L – which is one of the four Medigap plans compared in your evaluation – may be
slightly higher next year, as will some of its cost-sharing.
Your questionnaire indicated that you want to consider only Medigap policies. Your evaluation
compares four Medigap plans (Plans F, G, N, and L). As you know, Medigap policies do not
include prescription drug coverage, so you will also need to enroll in a Part D stand-alone plan,
discussed below.
It might help to review features that all Medigap policies share (you may already be aware of
these). These policies can be purchased during the first six months you have Part A and Part B
without your having to answer health-related questions.
But after that six-month period has past, in North Carolina as well as most other states, if you
want to get a Medigap policy or upgrade from a less comprehensive to a more comprehensive
Medigap plan, you will have to answer questions about your health before getting a quote. And
people who have serious pre-existing conditions may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy,
upgrade to a more comprehensive plan, or switch their policy to another insurer after the initial
six-month guaranteed-issue period.
