Dear Mr. Steenburgen:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. Please check the information on the client data sheet on
page 5 to make sure it is correct. Because you want your coverage to go into effect on June 1,
2018, you should enroll in your supplemental coverage a few weeks prior to that date. That
way, you will have your enrollment cards for the Medigap policy and the Part D stand-alone
drug plan by June 1. Also, you will need to contact Social Security (800-772-1213) sometime
after April 1 to enroll in Part B, effective 6-1-18.
You indicated that you want to consider only Medigap policies for your secondary coverage.
After you’ve chosen the specific Medigap plan you want, we recommend that you call a
minimum of three insurance companies for their current quotes before deciding which
company you will buy from.
Some companies will raise their premiums between now and June, and it’s a good idea to have
the most recent quotes before deciding. Appendix B5 includes the names and toll-free
telephone numbers of the insurance companies that sell Medigap policies in Arizona.
Because Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage, you will also need to
enroll in a Part D stand-alone plan. To do that, after you chosen the plan you want you can
either call 800-MEDICARE or call the plan. Phone numbers for the two lowest-cost stand-alone
plans for your drugs are on page 4 of your evaluation.
You might want to wait until early May to enroll in your Part D plan in case there’s a change in
the Rx drugs you take. If there’s any change, let us know so that we can determine whether the
plans in your evaluation are still the lowest-cost choices (there is no charge for this follow-up, if
it is needed).
In most cases the costs shown in your evaluation are for the 2018 plan year, even though you
will be enrolled only for the last seven months of the year.
Medigap policy choices
The evaluation compares four Medigap plans (F, G, N, and L), all of which provide good
coverage. Plans F, G, and N are similar, while Plan L requires more cost sharing but unlike the
