On June 23, 1960 lunch counters opened and began serving Black patrons. 5. How might you use this text to argue that protesting successfully transforms society? In just two weeks protestors were able to desegregate lunch counters through peaceful, sit-in protests. Given that this occurred during a time when the country was still very much segregated, and prior to the passing of the Civil Rights Act, this text shows that with persistence and strategy protesting can change society. Suggestions to Increase Accessibility Shallow scaffold: o “Jigsaw” the timeline assigning an event to each student, then have them summarize and share with a group Medium scaffold: o Divide students into groups and assign each group one timeline event to read together and report on o Front-load vocabulary Deep scaffold: o Focus on 2-3 timeline events (beginning, middle, end) that summarize the sit-ins o Revise the timeline recreating it with 2-3 sentence summaries for each event            The Black Inquiry Project 50
