The Old Derbeian Society
Charles Sissons Ayre – 1892 to 1899 Royal Field Artillery. Died of cerebral meningitis on June 13th1915, in hospital at Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Benjamin Morley Badcock – 1906 to 1910
We regret to say that a report has been received from a reliable source that B. M. Badcock, who joined the Army recently on attaining military age has been killed in action; but we have not seen any official statement to that effect, so there may still be hope that the report is not correct.
Edward Arthur Bassano – 1910
2nd Lieut E. A. Bassano, Sherwood Foresters, was killed in the German trenches in an attack on a strong position on October 1st 1916. He enlisted in June 1915 in the Royal Fusiliers and went out with them to France, spending the winter there. He was sent home to train for his commission in the spring of 1916 and after spending four months in an Officers' Cadet Battalion he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters and a month later returned to France.
Robert Vincent Beare – 1891 to 1894
Lance-Cpl R. V. Beare, Lewis Gunner, B. Company 2nd Worcestershire Regt was killed in action on the Western Front Sept 29th 1918. Aged 41. He joined the 2nd Worcesters as a private in July 1912. After a preliminary training at Plymouth and Dovercourt he crossed over to the Western Front in November 1917. He was made a Lance-Cpl for the excellence of his Lewis gunnery at Bailleul. In civil life he was a cashier at Lloyd's Bank, Dudley, having started in the Ashbourne Branch on leaving school.
He played in the !st Football XI of 1894 and being a very fast, athletic and scientific player excelled in his place as outside right; where his runs down the side and excellent centres were things to be remembered. He was a member of the School Cadet Corps. By his sunny disposition and sympathetic good nature he endeared himself to those with whom he came in contact both in business and in private life.
Karl Bemrose – 1907 to 1909
2nd Lieut. Karl Bemrose, Sherwood Foresters was reported missing near Gommecourt, July 1st 1916. As no further information has been received of him it is now presumed that he was killed in action on that date.
Roderick Henry Bemrose – 1907
Lieut. R. H. Bemrose, M.C., R.F.A., died from pneumonia following influenza at No. 8 Red Cross Hospital, B.E.F. in France on Nov. 7th 1918 at the age of 21 years 11 months.
Lieut. Bemrose, who only returned to the front quite recently after recovering from wounds sustained earlier in the year, had been in France since March 1917. Some time ago he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in action, and had been wounded on Sept. 1st 1918. Prior to receiving his commission he was at Clare College, Cambridge and a member of the Inns of Court O.T.C.
